I had three problems in the shop that were bugging me enough to fix. All the stars aligned and I found one project to help with all three problems.
It’s not much of a plan, but at this point it was all I needed. Since I didn’t have floor space to spare, I planned to replace the steel DeWalt planer stand with this mobile stand. The four drawers would provide a much-needed storage boost to a shop still hurting for places for tools to live, and by making it a little bit taller than the stamped-steel stand it would raise the planer bed to the same level as my outfeed table, giving me more flexibility in handling long pieces with the planer. Then, I could take the nice, heavy duty mobile base that was under the planer and move it to the bandsaw, where an older mobile base was not really up to handling the weight. A rare win-win-win situation for relatively little effort.
This is pretty much the exact same design as the table saw storage unit, or the smaller router table storage unit: just a basic box with drawers and casters. I cut the box parts out of 18mm baltic birch plywood and the back from 6mm.
This box is 28-1/4″ tall, 22″ deep, and 28″ wide. I rabbeted the back to receive the back panel and went ahead and spray-painted the outside my traditional colonial red. Inside I put the drawer slides; my drawers are 8-3/4″, 7-1/2″, 7″, and 5″ because I needed deeper drawers for tools that wouldn’t fit in the 4″ drawers in the worktable.
For drawers I used the same 18mm and 6mm ply, since I bought a bunch of it and it was handy. I made sure the fit inside before cutting the fronts.
Then, while I still had the back panel off and could easily open that top drawer, I cut the drawer fronts to fit and placed them.

It’s nice wood; machines as easily as oak, but costs a little bit less.
Having established the right sizes and fit, I grabbed four drawer pulls that I already had in the shop — leftover from Sarah’s dresser and chest of drawers — and mounted them. Then I placed them one at a time starting from the bottom, and screwed them in from the inside. The top drawer I had to secure with double-sided tape so I could pull it out to put in the screws.
Now to attach the planer itself. I didn’t realize it before I took it off the old stand, but there are bolts protruding from the bottom of its mounting board. I had to drill four 3/4″ x 5/8″ holes in my cabinet top to accommodate those so the planer would sit flush. Then I used 1/4-20 machine screws, nuts, and washers to secure the masonite planer base to the cabinet proper. It probably wasn’t going anywhere anyway — the planer weighs 92lbs by itself — but I didn’t want any chance that a long, heavy board would pull it loose or crooked.
The top drawer holds spare planer knives and my spare bags for the dust collector, which sits immediately to its left. The next drawer down holds my planes, which had been all over the shop, and the next one down my sanders, which were also all over the place. The bottom drawer is still empty for now, but it won’t stay that way. With the 2-inch casters it the planer bed sits about 1/16″ above my outfeed table and tablesaw, which is just about perfect. It means I can change the angle to accommodate longer stock without having to open the garage door, which isn’t always an option depending on weather.
And yes, once it was done I dismantled the DeWalt planer stand and got my son Ben to help me transplant the bandsaw to the beefier mobile base. My foot is much happier when I need to move the bandsaw now.
