Roselyn’s Toy Chest, design

Roselyn is the daughter-to-be of family friends Scott and Kate.  Julie’s friend Anni asked me a while ago about designing an heirloom-grade toy box as a new baby gift, so I did some research and came up with a few options.  The obvious starting point was the traditional huge-box-with-a-lid approach.  As a parent myself I’ve always found those to clumsy and awkward.  By the time a child is tall enough to be able to open the box and reach all the way to the bottom, they’ve outgrown most of the stuff they’d store in it.  But I drew up a design that included a pull-out step to help Roselyn get up to the seat and/or to the inside of the chest.

Then I had another idea:

The dimensions of this one are in the same range as the chest-style boxes — 32 inches wide, 18-1/4 high at the seat, 20 inches deep — but instead of a huge box that opens at the top, this one divides that same space into two drawers that pull out on heavy-duty, full extension slides.  The advantages of this, to me, were huge:  it’s easier for a small person to open drawers than to life a big chest lid; it’s safe, because there’s no risk of a lid getting slammed down on fingers or forehead; and when Roselyn outgrows her early childhood toys it will still be useful for storing grown-up items, be it blankets or shoes or clothing.

Anni and I both like the two-toned look I’ve done on other pieces, so we decided on maple for the primary wood with maple veneer plywood panels and poplar for the drawer boxes.  That would keep the cost under control while still providing beauty and durability.
