Outdoor Plant Stand design

Way back in March, when spring was right around the corner, I designed this for my wife Julie:

My original plan was to have it done for her birthday in May.  That was before I knew I needed surgery on my left foot, which took me out of the workshop for almost four months.  So here it is, late summer, and I’m finally getting around to it.

The purpose of this piece is to sit on the front porch, look pretty, and let Julie place potted flowers in it.  The design criteria were pretty simple:  it had to look nice; it had to put the flowers at a height where Julie can easily water them and see them, but leaving enough room above for hanging baskets; and it had to be stable enough to remain standing during a moderate storm (we’ve had issues with store-bought stands falling over).

I took some style cues from the architecture of the front porch where it will sit — the ogee details and the gentle curve of the upper ends, specifically.  It stands about 40 inches high, which is accessible for Julie (who is 4 foot 10) and low enough to still allow the hanging baskets we have in place.  To make it stable, it has long feet (24 inches) and sturdy sides joined together by a thick frame.  Since any kind of panel would catch wind and act like a sail, I included a grid similar to the one in our cherry and walnut bed, but with wider spacing.

Assuming that this will get rained on — it’s only semi-sheltered by the porch roof — I designed the tray using solid wood slats with a modest space between them to allow water to run off instead of collecting.  Any pot 12 inches or less in diameter at the bottom and 17 or less in diameter nine inches above the bottom will fit this tray.

I initially intended to go with white oak, which is reasonably moisture resistant, and protect it from exposure with exterior grade paint to match the porch itself.  But Amy, the proprietress of my local Woodcraft store, suggested African mahogany as a value-priced alternative.  I’ve never worked with any mahogany before — I thought they were all out of my price league — but when I looked at the stock, and compared the price to white oak, it seemed like a good choice.  And it’s pretty enough that I threw away the paint plan; I’ll use marine varnish instead.

There is one more detail that isn’t in the drawings.  Those wide legs and tray ends just scream for some kind of ornamentation.  I’m considering my options there.
