Drill Press Stand

The shop is evolving as I get more active with my woodworking again.  Back in November I got rid of the tiny Tradesman drill press I’d had and replaced it with a Jet JDP-12.  The Jet is a pleasure to use, but of course it’s a lot bigger than the machine it replaced — including the Woodpecker table I put on it, it took up half the width of my side work bench.  And my bits, hole saws, and other drilling accessories were all over the place.

I solved the problem by building this drill press stand.  It was a very simple project both in design and execution.  All of the panels are birch plywood, finished in Rustoleum Heritage Red paint.  The edging pieces are aspen, left over stock from my knock-down assembly table.  The drawer pulls are made from scrap maple, and the drawer boxes from 1/2-inch plywood.  (Hey, it’s a tool stand; it doesn’t have to be pretty.)

I did spring for two parts:  two pairs of ball-bearing drawer slides and four double-locking swivel casters.  The drawer slides can hold 100lbs per pair, which ought to be plenty for my collection of drill bits, hole saws, hold-downs, and whatnot associated with drilling and boring.  The casters roll smoothly and lock tight with a press on the lever.  The lever locks both wheel rotation and stem swivel, so when locked the stand will not wiggle or move at all.

(Yes, that’s a new Rikon bandsaw behind it.  My 30-year-old Sears bandsaw died after giving its all on my Ultimate Computer Desk and had to be replaced.)
