Cherry and Walnut night stand, design

The nine-drawer dresser project was a huge success.  Julie and I are enjoying it, and I’ll admit to taking particular pleasure in hauling the Ikea thing to the dump and tossing it over the side.

Now the ugliest thing left in our bedroom is the night stand next to my side of the bed.  It’s the last remaining piece from my original bedroom set, bought at auction over 30 years ago.  It’s small, and it’s sad-looking because the fake ebony veneer has flaked off in multiple places.  And there’s no matching night stand for Julie’s side.  So we’ll address this next.

Here’s my SketchUp model:

As you can see, it takes a lot of style cues from the dresser — after all, it’s supposed to be part of a set.  It’s a cherry box on a walnut base with a solid walnut top.  The dimensions are slightly smaller than the night stand I made as part of the maple bedroom set but significantly wider and deeper than my current one.  I went with two drawers for this one versus the single drawer I did in the maple bedroom set.  The drawers make it easier to get to the things that are stored in the night stand and looks neater when closed.  The drawer pulls are the same oil-rubbed bronze knobs I bought for the dresser (convenient, since I have about a dozen left over from the bulk pack I bought for that project).  The shelf at the bottom I left open because it’s where I tend to put my shoes.  Not in the drawing, but definitely in the plan, is an embedded power outlet just like I used in the maple bedroom set.

I’ll be making two of these:  one for my side of the bed and one for Julie’s.   Stock prep is already underway.
