Several exciting things have happened since the end of August, all of which conspired to keep me out of the workshop for over two months. I’ve been jonesing to make something on my spiffy new router table … if I could find the time. It took until November, but I did.
I don’t know what an expert would call this. I had some cherry already laminated together and planed to 3/4 thickness because it was left over from making cutting boards in the summer. It wasn’t enough to do a full-sized board, but it occurred to me that it was a good size to do something I often do with my cutting boards — move them to the dining room table and put hot things on them. Since its purpose is to put hot pots and pans on to serve food from, I’m calling it a serving board.
There was very little actual work involved in this because the blank was already made. I curved the ends using the same template I used for Julie’s bra rack and debated what to do to put some visual interest into the top. I’m not much for intricate detail, so I went with a simple pattern of grooves made with my compact router, a 3/8″ core box bit, and an edge guide. (Interesting discovery: my DeWalt compact router’s edge guide does not fit its plunge base, but the 20-year-old factory edge guide from my Porter-Cable 690 does. Go figure.) It’s hard to tell from the photo, but the grooves follow the arc of the edges. I did a simple 1/4″ quarter-bead around the top edge, sanded everything to 180 grit and called it done.

The finish is just 3 coats of Behlen’s butcher block finish (mineral oil and wax). I applied four sorbothane feet to the underside so it will sit still on the table without sliding around.
I still have several projects going on that have nothing to do with wood, but I need more balance between work and fun. It will not be 2 months before I post again.
