Custom Desk and Bookcase, part 1

Just a quick note because it’s been two months since I posted anything. I’ve spent that time remaking parts of the fireplace mantle and refinishing Julie’s plant stand. But those aren’t sexy enough to do posts about.

I’ve started a project that is, though. A friend of the family has a need for a new desk, and I had time. So, we’re going the work-for-hire route again. We designed it together, and it’s going to be a heck of a project.

Desk design, drawn up in Fusion 360

It will be similar to my computer desk that I built six years ago, in that the desktops are laminate-covered plywood trimmed with cherry, and it will have an upper shelf on one side. But this is designed to her specific needs and the dimensions of her space.

The longest dimension is 104 inches, going across the back, but that’s broken up by the three pieces. On the left is a flat table 50″ wide and 34″ deep; on the right is a desktop that measures 70″ x 28″, and the bookcase in the middle is 40″ wide and 20″ deep. The desktop is at 29″, which is a little on the high side but my friend is very tall, so that’s actually a good height for her.

This will be built as 3 separate pieces and made to pack somewhat flat for transport. The legs will be one piece each; the stretchers between them another piece, held to the legs by bedrail fasteners (knock-down); the desktops another piece, held to the legs by bolts and threaded inserts. The bookcase will be one unit.

This one is going to be a challenge because of the sheer size of it — I may have to move the HDPE table out of the shop temporarily or break it down in order to fit the assembled pieces together.

I’ve already started construction, so there will be more frequent updates as I go.
