There wasn’t a lot of woodworking to do here, of course.  I prepped the stock in my usual way, taking it down to 3/4 inch thick with one straight edge, then squared the ends and cut the wide pieces to my finished length (78-3/8 inches).  Then I ripped those pieces into 3-3/4 inch wide strips and chamfered all of the long edges on the router table to get rid of the sharp corners.  The planer and high-TPI saw blade left faces and edges that were clean enough to handle, so I didn’t bother with any sanding.  There is also no point in putting finish on bed slats, so I didn’t.

Final assembly was quick and easy, especially with Ben around to help.  We simply inserted the tabs on the side rails into the slots on the headboard and footboard and pushed down to lock them in place.  We squared up the frame with a tape measure, then placed the long bridge in place down the middle and laid the slats across, spacing them evenly by eye.

It was gratifying to see that when the mattress arrived that it fit nicely.  A standard king mattress is 76 inches wide and 80 inches long; I’d sized the inside of the frame at 80 x 83 so that there would be room to shift the mattress around a little while making the bed, and so that during warmer months we could just fold up the comforter and slip it down between the mattress end and the footboard for storage.
