King Bed in Cherry and Walnut, design

The final piece of Julie’s and my new bedroom set is a king-sized bed:

As you can see, I’ve deliberately taken a lot of style cues from the dresser and night stands so that it is clearly a set.  The headboard and foot board have solid walnut at the bottom and top, and the walnut rails joining them together creates a similar look to the walnut base on the other pieces.  I’ve also echoed the long curve along the front (foot board, in this case) rail of that base.  Cherry frames form the main mass of the head and foot boards.  Most of the frame parts are 2 inches thick, made by laminating pairs of 5/4 boards planed to 1 inch.  The legs are 2-1/2 inches wide and a foot long.

I started to draw this out using walnut panels, but it looked too plain and boxy that way.  By substituting a lattice made up of 1×1″ walnut strips, half-lapped together at the intersections, the piece gains visual interest and also a lighter appearance.

Due to the poor economy and trouble finding work or high levitra purchase paying jobs, people are considering going to computer and technical training schools have the options of two-year degrees, four-year degrees and individual courses for continuing education. Aside from those lattices (which aren’t actually as difficult to do as they may look), this bed is very simple.  The cherry stiles and rails go together with stub tenon and groove joinery, and I’ll use a series of loose tenons to join the cherry assemblies to their respective walnut bases.  The bed rails join to the legs with the same knock-down bed fasteners that I used for the maple bed, because they’re easy to work with and plenty strong.  A standard king sized mattress is 76 inches wide and 80 inches long, so the interior dimensions of this frame are 78″ x 82″ to give me some room to make the bed.

I didn’t bother drawing the maple slats that will stretch between the rails to support the box spring and mattress.  They are simply strips of 4/4 maple planed to 3/4″ thickness and cut 3 inches wide x 81-1/2 inches long to fit neatly between the two side rails.

The build is already underway; with good time management Julie and I should be sleeping in this bed by Christmas.
