Part of being a wood nerd is giving handmade gifts.  I think I’ve made something for everyone in my immediate family at one time or another.  But now that all of my kids are grown up and moved out, they have new needs … or I have new opportunities.  Kinda depends on how you want to look at it.

When my daughter Sarah saw Bill and Amy’s shoe box she really liked it.  Something like that for her front hall would be very welcome, she told me, and I made a mental note.  With Christmas approaching, I revisited the idea and went to her house to gather requirements and take some measurements.

What I ended up with is nothing like the shoe box.  Sarah and Matt (her husband) have a bench in their front hall already which has some storage, but it’s not really working for them.  What they really wanted, it turned out, was something bigger and more versatile than a low box masquerading as a seat.  I drew up a couple of options for a storage chest, and they picked this one.

It’s sort of a cross between a dresser and a secretary.  Overall dimensions are 48 inches high, 36 wide, and 17 deep.  That matches the footprint of the piece it’s replacing, so we know it won’t be too big.  Two deep drawers (12 inches high, 16 deep, 32 wide) will store blankets, scarves, and whatever else without the problems of top access.  Larger items can go in the upper area behind the hinged doors, and smaller ones in the cubbies.  With the doors closed the things inside should be safe from the cats, though I can’t make any guarantees about things put on top for show.

Sarah wanted a very light color and Matt a medium one, so we’re compromising.  I bought a supply of hard maple and maple veneer plywood and some poplar for the drawer boxes, and we’ll do a two-tone look like I did in the maple bedroom set.  This time, though, I will use an aniline dye on the frame pieces and leave the panels in their natural color.

I just bought the stock yesterday (12/20), so there’s no way this will be done for Christmas, but with two long weekends coming up I should be able to get it done before all the holiday decorations are put away.
